Born in Kazakhstan in 1962, Marat Bisengaliev made his début at the age of nine. He later studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow with two distinguished teachers, Boris Belinki and Valery Klimov. He was a prize-winner in 1988 at the Leipzig International Bach Competition, and in 1991 won first prize at the International Nicanor Zabaleta Competition in Spain, also receiving the special virtuoso prize for the most outstanding performance of the competition. A major recording contract was signed in 1991 with Naxos and Marco Polo.
His recording of the Mendelssohn concertos with the Northern Sinfonia became Gramophone Critic’s Choice of the year in 1998. Fanfare nominated his recording of the concerto by the British composer Havergal Brian with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra as critics’ choice of 1994. Bisengaliev was awarded a Gold Disc from Sony BMG for Tlep, which had its première in London’s Royal Albert Hall. In 2000 he received the first Independent Platinum Tarlan Award and the Government Medal of Honour in Kazakhstan.
Bisengaliev also founded the West Kazakhstan Philharmonic Orchestra in 2003. The orchestra’s first CD, Requiem by Karl Jenkins, was released on EMI, to become No. 1 in the Classical Artists Chart and No. 1 in the British Classic FM Magazine Hall of Fame. In 2006 Bisengaliev became Artistic Director of the Symphony Orchestra of India (SOI), the country’s first fully professional symphony orchestra. He was named Man of the Year in 2009 and Man of the Decade in 2010 in Kazakhstan.
Founded in 1935 in Warsaw, the orchestra was created and led by Grzegorz Fitelberg until the outbreak of World War II. In March 1945 Witold Rowicki revived the orchestra in Katowice. In 1947, Grzegorz Fitelberg, upon his return from abroad, took over the post of the artistic director. After his death in 1953, the orchestra was headed in succession by Jan Krenz, Bohdan Wodiczko, Kazimierz Kord, Tadeusz Strugała, Jerzy Maksymiuk, Stanisław Wisłocki, Jacek Kaspszyk, Antoni Wit, Gabriel Chmura and, once again, Jacek Kaspszyk. In September 2000, Joanna Wnuk-Nazarowa was appointed the general and programme director. In January 2009 Michał Klauza became the associate conductor. Stanisław Skrowaczewski holds the title of the first guest conductor of the PNRSO, Jan Krenz is a honorary director and the function of artistic advisor is fulfilled by Jerzy Semkow.
The orchestra has recorded more than 198 compact discs for many Polish and foreign labels (Decca, EMI, Phillips, Naxos, etc.) and made numerous archival recordings for the needs of Polish Radio. Many renowned conductors and soloists have performed with the PNRSO in Poland and abroad. Among them were: Martha Argerich, Leonard Bernstein, Placido Domingo, Pierre Fournier, Nicolai Gedda, Julius Katchen, Wilhelm Kempff, Kiryłł Kondraszyn, Marguerite Long, Witold Lutosławski, Kurt Masur, Krzysztof Penderecki, Maurizio Pollini, Ruggiero Ricci, Mścisław Rostropowicz, Artur Rubinstein, Isaac Stern, Henryk Szeryng, Yan Pascal Tortelier and Krystian Zimerman. Idil Biret has recorded with PNRSO all the piano concertos of Brahms and Rachmaninov as well as two works for piano and orchestra of Schumann (Op. 92 and Op. 134).
Born in Austria, Johannes Wildner studied conducting, violin and musicology and has established himself as one of the foremost Austrian conductors. His years of experience as a member of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra have given his conducting a distinctive stamp. After positions as chief conductor of Prague State Opera and first permanent conductor of Leipzig Opera, Johannes Wildner was the general music director of the New Philharmonic Orchestra of Westphalia (Germany) for ten years from 1997. He has been principal guest conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra in London since 2010.
Johannes Wildner has recorded over sixty CDs, DVDs and videos. His most recent release is Robert Schumann’s complete works for piano and orchestra, with pianist Lev Vinocour and the RSO Vienna.
